Rabbi Jacobs is the author of seven non-fiction books, including acclaimed works on difficult areas of practical Talmudic law, in use worldwide. For over a decade, he acted as the Tel Aviv University campus chaplain (Chabad).

 

Rabbi Jacobs is the legal authority for numerous popular web sites.

 

Jacobs was perhaps the first American ordained by the head rabbis of Israel. He holds a PhD (equivalency) from the Israel Dept. of Religion, and completed training as a Rabbinic attorney.

 

He served as a lieutenant in an Israel army combat engineering unit, on active duty during the entire Gulf War.

 

Rabbi Jacobs retired from the Israel Prison Service in 2005, where he was the only American staff officer, a Major, serving as a prison chaplain and hand-to-hand combat instructor.

In 2006, he was awarded an eighth degree Master Instructor certificate in Los Angeles, CA.

Youth

Philip, aka Flippy, Jacobs was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Harold and Rita Jacobs, second-generation Jewish Americans of Russian descent. He has a younger brother, Eric, who lives in Vermont and an older sister, Dr. Elizabeth Jacobs-Pinson, a clinical psychologist, who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.


Jacobs grew up in Vermont, and elected American Legion Vermont Boys' State governor. He earned his Black Belt in karate at 17, winning among others the 1976 YMCA Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight title. He is a certified private pilot, and graduated from the University of Vermont.

 

Personal

Fishel is married to Miriam, who is director of the Biblical Studies Department at Beit Rivkah seminary. They have seven children, ages 12-27, two of whom are attorneys. Fishel and Miriam and the kids at home live in Kfar Chabad, Israel, a suburb of Tel Aviv. Fishel travels frequency worldwide.
